Two-time Tony winner and Smash alum Christian Borle will play the eponymous Willy Wonka in the Broadway musical version of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. It’s a madcap run for Borle, who won a Tony for his performance in Something Rotten! last year, and will star in the Lincoln Center revival of Falsettos in the fall before Wonka begins its run in March 2017. The Broadway version, like the show currently in production on London’s West End, will feature music from Marc Shaiman and a book by David Greig, but the New York Times reports that the Broadway production will more closely resemble the 1971 movie version starring Gene Wilder as the sugar mogul. MacArthur Fellow Basil Twist, who won the “genius” grant in recognition of his puppeteer work, will also join the production.
